Marcus Rashford has posted an emotional farewell message to Scott McTominay on Instagram after the midfielder left Manchester United to join Napoli on transfer deadline day.

McTominay sealed his £25.7million move to the Italian giants, ending his 22-year association with United.

McTominay and Rashford came through the United academy together before breaking into the first team, and Rashford referenced this in his Instagram post on Friday night.

Alongside a photo of himself and McTominay together in the gym as kids during the early stages of his time at United, Rashford wrote on Instagram: “It’s been a long journey… Good luck in Italy mate.”

The Scottish star also took to Instagram following confirmation of his move to Napoli, accompanying a short video of his best moments at United with the simple message: “Thank you @ManchesterUnited.”

McTominay made his debut for the Red Devils in 2017 and went on to make 255 appearances in all competitions.

He scored 29 goals, proving to be a valuable first-team player under several different managers.

But after losing ground in recent months under Erik ten Hag, McTominay decided to move on.

He has now swapped England for Italy to play under former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.

Rashford remains at United but has had a quiet start to the season and failed to regain his place in the England squad earlier this week.

He also came in for heavy criticism from Alan Shearer for his performance in United’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton last weekend.

But Ten Hag came to his defence on Friday, branding Shearer’s analysis “stupid” as he criticised the Match of the Day pundit’s comments.

However, Rashford could be under pressure to keep his place in United’s starting XI ahead of Sunday’s decisive clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
