As a result, hundreds of former England players have had to wait to receive their historic exploits.

Alan Shearer was honored with his while attending Wembley for the friendly with Brazil, but his former strike partner Lineker, who scored 48 goals in 80 games for the Three Lions, is still without one.

Watching a clip of Mainoo receiving his hand-me-down cap, Lineker said on his Rest Is Football podcast, which he hosts alongside Shearer and Micah Richards: “The three of us had a special treat on Saturday night.

“We were all at Wembley for the England-Brazil match in the royal box and when I say gift, I mean everything related to the match. Not necessarily the game itself.

“There was a special event to celebrate the life of Terry Venables and the Euro 96 team he coached and our own Alan Shearer even picked up his legacy with the England cap.

‘Tell us what Alan is because I don’t have one yet.

“I didn’t even know it existed.”
