Lingard spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, impressing with nine goals in 16 appearances.

The forward played the second half of the game on Sunday when United defeated Derby 2-1 in their first friendly of the season.

“Jesse has come back, has been smart, he wants to fight for his place and there is nothing better than seeing players fight for their place.

“What he did at the end of last season, that’s the real Jesse, that’s what we’re capable of and I think towards the end we saw that sometimes we were missing some options. Jesse is currently in the planning stage.
