Paul Pogbag will go home with a £3.78 million loyalty bonus when he leaves Manchester as a free agent at the end of the month.

United confirmed on Wednesday that Pogba will leave Old Trafford for a second time when his contract expires on June 30, marking the end of one of the most disappointing – and costly – careers in the club’s history.

The loyalty bonus is a final insult to fans who have never seen the best of the French World Cup winner during a disappointing second six-year spell at United.

But those were the dizzying terms United offered Pogba to lure him back from Juventus for a then world-record fee of £89million in 2016, after initially losing him to the Italians for compensation of just £1.5million in 2012.

In addition to the huge transfer fee, United also paid £39.27 million to agent Mino Raiola, who died in April, to close the deal.

Pogba was initially paid a base salary of £8.61 million – falling to £7.75 million when the annual loyalty bonus kicked in at the end of his first year – as well as image rights payments totaling £2.87 million a year and a bonus of £1,875 for each of the four times United have qualified for the Champions League while there.

The total bill for Pogba adds up to a staggering £218.93 million – £968,716 for each of his 226 games or £5,613 million for each of his 39 goals.

United will not see a return on their investment if Pogba moves to another club as a free agent in a few weeks, after holding talks with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Juventus about a return to Turin.

United are also not getting anything for Jesse Lingard after he confirmed he will end a 22-year association with the club on June 30.
