Jadon Sancho will wear the number 25 shirt for Manchester United, the club has announced, following the 21-year-old’s arrival from Borussia Dortmund.
After more than a year of negotiations, United finally landed their man on Friday as Sancho completed his £73million transfer from the Bundesliga club and signed a five-year deal.
There had been speculation that Sancho would don the number 7 shirt, following in the footsteps of the club’s most famous wingers, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and George Best, to take over the number.

However, the club has announced that Sancho will wear the number 25 shirt meaning the number 7 shirt will remain in Edinson Cavani’s possession after he took the number last summer.
Sancho wore the number 7 shirt for Borussia Dortmund and was number 17 for England at the European Championship.
The number 25 shirt was most recently worn by striker Odion Ighalo, while Antonio Valencia wore the shirt between 2009 and 2019, with Nick Powell becoming number 25 for the 2012-13 season.
Sancho’s arrival has sparked excitement among United fans, with the club desperate for silverware under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after losing to Villarreal in the Europa League final on penalties last season.

“I will always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the chance to play in the first team, although I always knew I would return to England one day,” he said.
“The chance to go to Manchester United is a dream come true and I can’t wait to perform in the Premier League.
“This is a young and exciting squad and I know that together we can grow into something special to bring the success the fans deserve.
“I look forward to working with the Manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”
