Roy Keane believes Manchester United will not be able to face a serious Premier League title challenge next season with Edinson Cavani as their first-choice attacker.
The Uruguayan impressed Old Trafford this season and received huge praise for his performance in United’s 6-2 win over Roma midweek, scoring twice and assisting two more goals.
Cavani arrived on a 12-month contract last summer, but there is the option to extend for another year and many believe the striker justified an extension.

The Uruguayan has been in good shape lately, but his future at Old Trafford has yet to be decided
Keane believes, however, that the striker has done his best and that United should look elsewhere in the transfer window for next season.
“ In a way I hope they don’t keep him because then they might look and think we don’t have to get another (striker), ” Keane told SkySports.
He’s 34, if you Cavani hang your hat next year to let United win league titles again, forget it.
“He will be a backup striker and he will not want to be a backup striker, so that’s why he’s hesitant to sign a new contract and there are clearly family reasons for that.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad are in a strong position to finish second this season and after dismantling Roma, they look set to be in the Europa League final next month.
Cavani’s contract expires at the end of the season, but many fans have asked for an extension
Looking ahead to next season, Keane urged his former club to sign a tent and take a big step towards an enduring title challenge.
“ I’m going back to recruiting at United, and going forward they definitely need to make a big, big asset, be it a [Harry] Kane or one [Jack] Grealish – put a marker, Keane said.
Okay, they need one more center-back, but I still think at the top of the field, if you look at some of the games they’ve drawn this year, they’ve missed that real bit of quality.

‘They have some brilliant players and I clearly agree that progress has been made. The concern for Man United, the next step for Man United, is the biggest and the most difficult – and that is to get that league title.
‘Liverpool was brilliant last year, Man City excellent this season, but United is still a little short.
“ They have made progress and the concern for me now at United is that we look at United and say they have made progress, but talk about the financial side, off the field at Man United as if the assignment for Ole will. finish in the top four, or finish second, and want to get into the Champions League.
“But being with Man United has to be about winning trophies.”
