Manchester United have promoted the highly talented teenager Anthony Elanga to their Europa League side ahead of their draw against Granada.
United will face Spain’s Granada in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday evening, and one of the club’s most promising youngsters has been rewarded ahead of the crunch.
The Red Devils will fly to Spain on Wednesday and Swedish youth international Elanga is now the last youngster to compete for a place alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as he continues to show faith in the youth.
Youngster Anthony Elanga has been added to Manchester United’s Europa League squad
United are allowed under UEFA rules to add homegrown players to their Europa League ‘B’ list and Elanga has now been registered this week.
Elanga recently recovered from a collarbone injury he sustained after scoring twice in the Under 23s Premier League 2 game against Leicester City in January.
The 18-year-old, who trained with Solskjaer’s first team on Tuesday, is an old-fashioned winger who uses speed and deceit to beat his fullback and deliver crosses.
Elanga lived in Sweden until the age of 11 and was still a schoolboy when he made his debut for United’s Under 18s.
Elanga signed a new long-term deal with the Premier League giants last month
The forward is now a fixture for the Under 23s and there are high hopes for him to be a success at United.
Elanga was voted United’s Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year last season – an award that the club has great respect for.
Previous Jimmy Murphy Prize winners include Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
Last month, Elanga put a new long-term contract on paper with the Premier League giants.
Elanga got a taste of first-team football for United ahead of the 2020-2021 season, with a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa.
And later in the year, Elanga admitted that he was hungry to join Rashford and Greenwood in Solskjaer’s first team.
Elanga wants to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood
‘You look at people like Mason and Rashy, there is a path. It just shows you that if you are willing to put in work and keep working hard day after day, there is a path for you.
“We clearly have a manager in Ole who trusts the youngsters, so there is a path there and I just have to keep working hard.
‘I always work hard in training and the way I train is the way I play.
‘You can see that in the results and I am just happy at the moment, I enjoy my football.’
Elanga now has the chance to impress Solskjaer after earning a spot on United’s Europa League side.
