Lisandro Martinez doesn’t mean it literally, of course, but the new Manchester United cult hero says he must resist the urge to ‘kill’ opponents.

Martinez has lived up to his reputation as ‘The Butcher’ since following Erik ten Hag from Ajax to Old Trafford in the summer and his combative side has endeared him to United fans.

“It’s hard,” he smiles. “Sometimes I want to kill, but you also have to control. Argentine players are always like that. We are passionate.

“Football is everything to us, that’s why we always give everything. As a child I started fighting and crying when I lost, so it’s something we have in the blood, in the heart.’

The 25-year-old made a brutal introduction to English football when United lost their home opener to Brighton.

He was then hooked at half-time in the next match at Brentford with Ten Hag’s side 4–0 down.

Now they are vying for four trophies, with the United manager hoping to bag his first at Wembley on Sunday.

“He prepares for every game like it’s a final,” says Martinez. “He will prepare for the match in the same way as always. The team will be ready for that.’
