Manchester United will fend off any transfer interest in midfielder Scott McTominay – despite the imminent signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, according to reports.
The Scottish star was a regular member of interim boss Ralf Rangnick’s midfield last season, making 37 appearances in all competitions.
And according to The timessees new manager Erik ten Hag McTominay as ‘crucial’ for his rebuilding at the club.
Several central midfielders have left Old Trafford this summer, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic – plus Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, who can also play central – leaving on a free transfer at the end of their contracts.
McTominay is one of the few central players left at the club, alongside Brazilian Fred, Donny van de Beek, potential youth player James Garner and now de Jong.

But new manager Erik ten Hag (pictured) would see McTominay as ‘crucial’ for his plans
But that signing apparently has no bearing on 25-year-old McTominay’s position in the squad.
The Times reports that Newcastle and another Premier League club made inquiries about the availability of the 34-cap international earlier this summer.
But ten Hag has made it clear that the club will resist any bid for McTominay, who has a contract until 2025 and has played 170 games in all competitions since his debut in May 2017.

And McTominay looks set to impress in the new campaign, having grown significantly over the summer.
He took to social media to share a photo of himself during an overnight session with two friends, which left social media users in awe. In the photo, McTominay is topless, showing off his rippling muscles.
His condition suggests he has been working hard on his physical fitness in recent weeks, a trait that could potentially make him a key player under ten Hag.
