Manchester United’s defense has been labeled ‘softer than a MUFFIN’ by former David de Gea coach, who blames the keeper’s poor form on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ‘tactical organisation’.
- David De Gea’s former goalkeeper coach has a lot to say this week
- Gabino Rodriguez, who worked with De Gea at the Spanish U21 level, has defended him
- De Gea ended the season badly and was blamed in the Europa League final
- Rodriguez accuses Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and United ‘softer than a muffin’
David De Gea’s former goalkeeping coach has launched an extraordinary attack on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Manchester United team, in defense of the Spanish goalkeeper.
De Gea has been under fire for several weeks after losing his place in United’s senior squad before coming back between the sticks for the Europa League final, but failing to save a single penalty in a tense shootout.
It was then De Gea who went on to miss the crucial penalty against Villarreal after exhausting all the players on the pitch, and since then criticism has poured in over the Spaniard’s future in the wing.
David De Gea has received a passionate defense from his former coach Gabino Rodriguez
Rodriguez says ‘big problem is Solskjaer’s tactical organisation’ and not De Gea’s form
Now Gabino Rodriguez, who worked with De Gea as his coach at the Spain U21 level, says the blame lies purely with Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s tactics and poor defense that fails to protect the goalkeeper sufficiently.
Speaking with the SunRodriguez said: “I always believe that the team is a true reflection of the character of the coach. Look at the one headed by Sir Alex Ferguson and that would show no mercy.
“Ole’s team is softer than a muffin and David is suffering the effects of the defensive weaknesses.
He added that United have “defensive weaknesses” and are “softer than a muffin.”
“You have to protect your best asset in the team, but there is just an uncontrolled mess between the midfield and the defense with holes.
“Actually, Ole’s team has a brutal defensive weakness. The two central defenders are too slow, they are not commanders and other teams are well aware of that.
“The big problem is Solskjaer’s tactical organization. Underestimating United’s defensive shortcomings, De Gea and Ole just don’t convince me.”
Rodriguez went on to emphasize how the current squad is much different from the iconic sides of yesteryear in that it lacks players with guts and determination.
On a parting punch, Rodriguez added that he sees striker Edinson Cavani as the best defenders
Farewell to United, Rodriguez further underlined how he sees veteran striker Edinson Cavani as the club’s best defender, despite the tens of millions Solskjaer has spent on his backline and Harry Maguire’s world record acquisition.
Rodriguez added: “In the past, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes not only dictated matches, but they also did the dirty work and formed the defensive backbone.
“In Ole’s team, Edinson Cavani is the best defender!”
De Gea has been linked with moves to Spain this summer, along with reported interest from Paris Saint Germain.
The 30-year-old is United’s highest-earning star, reportedly in the region of £19.5 million a year.
