Daniel James has hit back at Jim White for falsely calling him a ‘big’ Liverpool fan before signing with Manchester United almost two years ago.

James moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2019 in a £ 17 million deal with high hopes on his shoulders after shining for Swansea – with his electric pace and direct running that caught the eye in the championship.

It was a significant move for the Welsh winger, but prior to his transfer to the Premier League giants, White – speaking of it on Sky Sports – claimed that James was actually backing the club’s arch-rival Liverpool.

But those comments have stuck with James to this day, who has admitted that this is certainly not the case – before revealing that he was actually following Chelsea.

James told United’s official website: ‘When I signed with United, I don’t remember who it was, one of the Sky Sports [pundits] said “he supports Liverpool”.

‘I didn’t think I support Liverpool, but I never wanted to say I supported Chelsea as a youngster.

‘When I started playing for Swansea [Chelsea] was the team I followed, but you don’t really support them.

‘I always watched their players when I was younger – [Eden] Danger, [Juan] Mata and [Didier] Drogba – and they were players I loved. You grow out of that a little bit. ‘

Ironically, James actually made his United debut against Chelsea – marking his first competitive appearance for the club with a goal after coming into the 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford on August 11, 2019.

“It was kind of strange to play them in the first game of the season and before the game I never thought I would come,” added James. ‘It’s a big game, I thought it would be a close encounter, but we were actually leading 3-0.

‘I think I got 15 minutes, which was great. It was surreal and the fans, when I made my debut, was just amazing that they clapped when you come and they really cheer you on. That really set me on fire. ‘

James hit back at White after his comments – which could have sent United fans the wrong way at the time.

“Swansea City has this boy Daniel James, a very impressive boy,” White said as he discussed the upcoming transfer.

‘I understand that this morning five of the top six, all except Manchester City, made inquiries about Daniel James in Swansea.

He was actually recommended to Manchester United by Ryan Giggs. He’s a kid, but he already has a pedigree.

‘But he’s a huge Liverpool fan and I wonder, are we going to see Daniel James on the way to Liverpool?

‘So if the news wasn’t great for Liverpool it could get even better soon.’
