Chris Sutton has claimed that Erik ten Hag is “deluded” following his comments after the Manchester derby.

Man City came from behind to beat Man United 3-1 on Sunday thanks to two goals from Phil Foden and one from Erling Haaland after Marcus Rashford’s impressive opener.

Despite City only taking the lead in the 80th minute, Pep Guardiola’s side had 73 per cent of the possession, while also forcing 27 attempts to United’s three.

However, after the match, Ten Hag praised his team’s performance, stating that they defended “brilliantly” and could have won the match.

And former Premier League winner Sutton, speaking on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast alongside football editor Ian Ladyman, attacked the Dutchman and said his comments were worrying.

“Erik ten Hag is deluded,” he said. “I think Man United have come full circle under him. They lost their first Manchester derby 6-3 and I predicted a cricket result that day and tried again yesterday.

“Manchester City are way ahead of Man United (but) the biggest concern, and I appreciate that the coaches have to put a positive spin on things, is hearing Ten Hag say things like ‘we’re making progress, it was a good performance’.” .

“If I were a Manchester United fan, I would really question what the manager is saying and the way the team is playing.

“The truth is that I don’t think anyone sees a future for Erik ten Hag (at United) beyond this season.”

City’s victory means they have won six of the last seven meetings between the teams.

They are 18 points behind them in the league this season with a superior goal difference of 37 goals.

He compared it to F1, where “everyone knows that Max Verstappen will win the championship.”

And while Ladyman highlighted his love for the Manchester derby and insisted Sunday’s clash was not a blowout, Sutton disagreed, claiming the rivalry is a mere formality.

“It is a derby in name, not in nature,” he added.

‘We know who is going to win. It’s like F1.

“Everyone knows that Max Verstappen is going to win the championship this season, just like everyone knows that Manchester City will beat Man United every time they play them.”
