A man was shot dead outside a gym in southwest Sydney on Thursday morning, police say.

Police said they were called to Carlingford Street in Sefton at around 6.30am after reports of a shooting outside the Elite Fight Force martial arts school.

Upon arrival, officers found a man with gunshot wounds. He was treated by paramedics, but died on the spot.

That is what a witness, David, told Ben Fordham Live on 2GB that he was in the back of his workshop, across the street from the gym, when he heard a series of bangs just before 7am.

“I was hoping (it) was a car backing up and when I heard a car pull away there was another series of bangs,” he said.

“Of course I was hesitant to go to the front of the workshop, and I slowly looked out the window and saw people coming out.

“Within minutes there was a load of ambulances, police everywhere, and then we saw a man on the ground who was not well… It was frightening.”

David estimated he heard between four and six explosions at first, followed by a pause and the same number of explosions as when the car took off.
