The man was taken to Westmead Hospital, but died a short time later.
The man has yet to be formally identified.
It is believed he was the same man who stabbed a 28-year-old man five minutes earlier at the Auburn train station. Neither man is known to each other.
The younger man was treated by paramedics at Auburn train station before being taken to Westmead Hospital in stable condition.
A critical incidents team, made up of officers from the State Crime Command’s homicide division, will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which included the firing of a police firearm.
That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
