A 49-year-old man is fighting for life after a horrific home invasion in Merewether, Newcastle.
Police were called to a residence on Coane Street around 3 a.m. Tuesday following reports of a home invasion.
Four teenage intruders entered the home, leading to a confrontation with the homeowners.

Police were called to a residence on Coane Street (pictured) around 3 a.m. Tuesday following reports of a home invasion. Four teenage intruders entered the home, leading to a confrontation with the homeowners.
During the fight, the 49-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach and the intruders fled.
The injured man was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, while a 75-year-old woman with minor injuries was also treated.
Shortly after, police arrested five teenagers, two boys and three girls, on suspicion of being linked to the incident.
They are currently cooperating with authorities at Newcastle Police Station.
