A man who bought chicken breasts at two different stores was surprised to learn how different they can be from each other.
Kalani Smith, known as Kalani Ghost Hunter on social media, posted a tiktok video on May 21 of him comparing chicken breasts he bought at WalmartPerdue and your local butcher in Tennessee.
The ghost hunter picked up each of the unopened packages of chicken breast before showing viewers the scale he would use to weigh each chicken breast and determine how different the birds were from each other.
The video of Smith’s “terrifying” discovery has received more than a million views and more than 5,000 TikTokers have left comments.
He immediately pointed out some of the differences between the chicken breasts before taking them out of the package.
Kalani Smith, known as Kalani Ghost Hunter on social media, posted a video on TikTok on May 21 comparing three chicken breasts purchased at different locations.
“Visually, you can see there’s a big difference between what we get from a farm at our local butcher and what we get at Walmart,” Smith said.
Pointing to the little words on the Walmart package, he said its chicken breast could have “up to 5 percent water retention.”
From that note, Smith, known primarily for his food and ghost hunting videos on social media, decided to take a piece of chicken breast from each brand and weigh them on a scale.
A chicken breast from a package he bought at his local butcher shop in Tennessee weighs 187 grams on a scale, while the others weighed more than 300.
Smith first took the largest chicken breast from his local butcher shop and carefully put it on the scale, before revealing that the farm-fresh chicken breast weighed 187 grams.
The ghost hunter then pulled out a piece of chicken breast from Walmart, but revealed that he would have to cut some of it off to make the results “as accurate as possible.”
The TikToker was left almost speechless after seeing that the weight of the Walmart chicken breast after trimming it was 392 grams.
Smith moved on to Perdue chicken breast, which he said was “supposed to be a little better quality than Walmart.”
However, he was shocked when he discovered that the Perdue chicken breast weighed 347 grams.
“If you compare the percentage difference between the smallest brisket we have and the largest, it’s 109.6 percent greater at Walmart than it is at our butcher,” Smith said.
“Perdue’s brisket is a little smaller and is 85.56 percent larger than our butcher’s brisket, but five percent was supposed to be water.”
The TikToker was almost speechless when he saw that the weight of the Walmart chicken breast, after trimming it, weighed 392 grams.
Smith’s jaw dropped when he discovered that the Perdue chicken breast weighed 12 ounces.
Smith’s “alarming” discovery comes a month after Walmart reached a multimillion-dollar settlement for inflating the weight of meat content in its packaging.
Customers were eligible for refunds on several chicken purchases, including 10 types of chicken breast products.
“We will continue to offer our customers low prices every day to help them save money on the products they want and need,” a Walmart spokesperson said. CNBC last month.
“We still deny the allegations, but believe a settlement is best for both parties.”
Several TikTokers who watched Smith’s video have spoken out about its alarming results.
The chicken discovery came just a month after Walmart found itself in a multimillion-dollar settlement after the chain was accused of inflating its meat products.
The bucher looks like normal chicken. The others look like giant, abnormal monster chickens,” one TikToker wrote on May 21.
At least two TikTokers joked that the extra weight in Walmart and Perdue chicken breasts was “growth hormones.”
However, one person wrote why chicken breasts can be so heavy.
“Water and preservatives are injected to make it bigger, but when it is cooked a lot of water is released,” the TikToker wrote.
Others agreed with that commenter, noting that heavier chicken will cost more money.
“You should definitely cook them all at the same time and weigh them afterwards,” one TikToker suggested in their comment.
“I bet those big guys lose a lot of weight, but the butchers don’t lose that much.”
