A man is fighting for his life after being shot in the chest by police on a south-west Sydney street.

The man was shot by officers on Williams Street, Bankstown, on Sunday morning.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The incident comes just days after a man was shot dead at Auburn police station after lunging at officers with a knife.

The Indian national had stabbed a cleaner at the nearby Auburn train station just before Tuesday around noon.

The officers tried to save the life of the 32-year-old man, but he was later pronounced dead by paramedics.

Detectives from the anti-terror unit are investigating the stabbing.

More to come.
