A Texas man is set to serve 70 years behind bars for spitting on police officers during his arrest for domestic violence after prosecutors pressed for harsh sentences.

Larry Pearson, 36, was sentenced Wednesday after being found guilty of two counts of harassing a government employee for spitting on two officers in May 2022.

He was arrested after a domestic violence incident where the victim reported it to an officer on Zenith Avenues and claimed Pearson hit her multiple times and held a gun on him. which turned out to be an airsoft gun.

The police report at the time stated that the victim had several “obvious injuries” to her face.

Prosecutors asked the jury to “send a message” to Pearson during closing arguments.

“If you’re going to live a life of crime, you’re going to do it among other criminals (in prison),” prosecutor Jessica Gorman said.

However, Pearson’s defense argued that this was a “minor misdemeanour” and that the situation “went out of control”.

The minimum sentence Pearson could have received was 25 years due to his previous convictions for aggravated robbery and ongoing domestic violence.
