A man is in critical condition after being stabbed at a McDonald's outside Christchurch airport on New Zealand's South Island (pictured) on Thursday night.

A man is in critical condition after being stabbed at a fast food restaurant in a late-night attack.

Emergency services were called to the McDonald’s near Christchurch airport on New Zealand’s South Island shortly after 11pm local time on Thursday.

The man was treated at the scene before being rushed to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.

A witness said he saw the man “covered in blood” being carried out of the restaurant on a stretcher.

“McDonald’s workers were helping with the injured person,” they told the New Zealand Herald.

“Police have cordoned off the McDonald’s and are speaking to people inside the restaurant.”

A St John spokesperson confirmed that an ambulance, a rapid response unit and a manager attended the scene.

“One person in a critical condition was taken to Christchurch Hospital,” he said.

New Zealand police have not yet released any details about the incident.
