Man dies after alleged assault at Frankston Pier, Melbourne, and man arrested nearby

A late-night altercation between two men on a Melbourne wharf has left one person dead.

Detectives arrested a man on the beach near Frankston Pier, in the city’s southeast, about 6am on Saturday, just hours after the incident, and said they were not looking for anyone else.

Police were called to the scene following reports of an assault on the pier opposite Pier Promenade.

When they arrived, officers found an unconscious man halfway up the structure, who died shortly after.

The man arrested has not been charged and is currently assisting police with their investigations.

Police said it is understood the two men did not know each other before the alleged assault.

The area has been cordoned off and forensic police are searching the crime scene.
