Manchester City are optimistic they will soon strike a deal for River Plate forward Julian Alvarez.

The 21-year-old player will not have a contract with his current club at the end of 2022 and seems to be getting closer to a move to Europe.

It was recently alleged that City had agreed a fee with River Plate for the exciting prospect, which would see him join the Premier League outfit in the summer.

By extension, it is now understood that the transfer could be completed in the near future, as reported by BBC Sports.

Alvarez is coming back from his best goalscoring season to date in 2021.

The young attacker scored 18 league goals in 21 appearances last year as River Plate won the Argentine league title at a gallop.

His performances at club level earned him international recognition when he made his debut in Argentina last June.

He played once as a substitute for his country during their triumphant Copa America campaign and has since played three more caps alongside global superstar Lionel Messi.

Pep Guardiola’s side have played largely without a recognized striker this season and it seems to be working for them as they have built a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

However, adding Alvarez to their ranks, who is also able to operate on the right wing, could give the team another dimension as they head into the 2022/23 season.
