Manchester City is close to signing Hertha Berlin coach Oliver Reiss as the new coach of the under-18 team

Hertha Berlin manager Oliver Reiss, 41, is in talks to take over as coach of Manchester City’s under-18 team.

The German is currently in charge of Hertha’s U19 team and has overseen 57 games since his appointment in 2022.

He had previously worked as an under-17 coach and had been assistant to the under-19 coach, having been with the German team as a coach for a total of 17 years.

However, Reiss is now ready for the next step in his career and is closing in on an appointment to manage City’s Under-18s team.

His style is considered to be similar to that of first-team coach Pep Guardiola, meaning players will be trained to play the way the Spaniard wants before they make the potential step up.

City have enjoyed success at Under-18 level in recent years under manager Ben Wilkinson, son of former Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson.

Wilkinson joined City in 2016 and has played various roles at the club, taking charge of the Under-18 team in the summer of 2021.

The club became the first under-18 team to win three consecutive Northern and National Premier League titles under his leadership.
