A man is due to appear in court today after allegedly dousing a one-year-old girl with gasoline before hitting her mother in the head with a glass as she desperately tried to wash the toxic substance from the child’s face.

Police were called to a house in Mount Saint Thomas, a suburb of Wollongong, south of Sydney, just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening over reports of a domestic attack.

The man, 41, is accused of verbally abusing the 48-year-old woman in the house before the mother and daughter fled to another room.

The mother tried to barricade the door with a pram, but the man forced his way in and poured gasoline on the child.

When the mother tried to wash the poisonous substance from her daughter’s face, police claimed the man then hit a glass on her head.

The mother and daughter managed to flee the house and call the police.

The one-year-old was treated by paramedics and did not require hospitalization.

The man was charged with triple assault, destruction or damage to property and stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear and bodily harm.

On Wednesday, he was denied bail to appear at the local court in Wollongong.
