‘Man airlifted to hospital in critical condition’ after multi-vehicle crash on M25

The M25 motorway was closed this morning after a multi-vehicle crash.

The counter-clockwise carriageway was closed between Junction 23 at South Mimms and Junction 22 at St Albans following reports of an accident at 0620 GMT this morning.

Emergency crews rushed to the crossing after the accident, which police say involved four vehicles, reports The Sun.

Delays of up to 50 minutes between crossings were reported.

Large queues were seen during rush hour this morning, at 8:30am, when national highways said they stretched more than five miles after the terror incident.

There was a bypass route, taking drivers off the M25 at junction 23 onto the northbound A1(M) and back onto the M25 via the A414, A1081 and B556.

National Highways East has now said that recovery is underway and cleanup is ongoing.

They confirmed that all lanes have reopened counterclockwise between junction 22 and junction 23.

They added: “There remains a 20-minute delay in the area, but should now start to taper off.”

One person is understood to have been taken to hospital after the crash, police said, report Sun.

An air ambulance was also called to the scene.

All emergency services remain in the collision.
