A teacher who went on the run after having sex with a student inside a high school classroom has agreed to plead guilty to charges.

Caitlin Thao, 24, a substitute at St Paul City School in Minnesota, sexually assaulted a 17-year-old boy after school hours in an empty classroom.

He was charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and a nationwide arrest warrant was issued by the Ramsey County District Court in May.

Thao accepted a plea deal this week, in which he will serve no more than six months in jail and register as a predatory offender, according to the Star Tribune.

The teenage victim told police on March 13 that he had sex with Thao in the classroom where she taught about six weeks earlier.

She resigned in late February and allegedly told a social worker at the mental health unit at Regions Hospital where she was being treated.

Thao agreed to plead guilty in Ramsey County District Court this week and will serve up to six months in prison before being released on parole.

He will also have to undergo a psychosexual examination and register as a predatory offender. His sentencing is scheduled for September 10.

St Paul City School sent a letter to parents on May 10 explaining that the alleged illicit sexual act had occurred with a 17-year-old boy after school hours in an empty classroom.
