Ronald Lee Syvrud, 66, was arrested by Arizona authorities in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Donald Trump

Arizona police have arrested a man accused of threatening to assassinate Donald Trump.

Ronald Syrvud, 66, was arrested Thursday night, about seven hours after the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office issued a wanted notice for him at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time.

“This subject has been taken into custody without incident in Cochise County. We appreciate all of the information received and the incredible collaborative efforts with all of our law enforcement partners,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Police previously said Syvrud has several other warrants out for his arrest on separate charges, including driving under the influence and failing to appear in court in Wisconsin, and failure to register as a sex offender and felony hit-and-run in Arizona.

This comes six weeks after an assassination attempt on Trump, in which a bullet hit the former president in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Sheriff Mark Dannels had tightened security in the area around the section of border wall Trump was visiting as the search for Syvrud continued.

Records show he was a registered Democrat in the past and has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1990, including a 2000 conviction for second-degree sexual assault of a child, to which he pleaded guilty.

The exact nature of the threats is unclear, however Sheriff Dannels told DailyMail.com they were received “via social media”.

“We have zero tolerance for any kind of threat or attempt at violence, so we will find him. He will go to jail,” Dannels said.

“He’s a registered sex offender here in Cochise County and we were looking for him. He’s in non-compliance as part of his violations. So we’re looking for him for that.

“We’re going to arrest him for that, but also for the fact that his pulse was clearly directed towards that event. So we want to talk to him about that.”

As Dannels added that security was being stepped up ahead of the speech, Secret Service snipers could be seen on a crane scanning the area.
