Major update after train strike brought Sydney to a standstill - here's what commuters need to know

Thousands of Sydneysiders hope to be able to return home safely on Thursday night after rail workers were ordered to stop their strike immediately.

The Fair Work Commission has ordered an interim order suspending all strike action until a hearing is held next week.

The strike ban came into effect on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The NSW government previously submitted a 424 application to the Fair Work Commission, in a bid to force a stop to the strike.

The development comes after two days of travel chaos as part of the rail union’s ongoing pay dispute.

An estimated 40 percent (about 1,500 rail services) were canceled or significantly canceled on Wednesday.

An additional 1,000 services were canceled on Thursday.
