A homeless man has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed a stranger to death at a popular swimming destination.

Police were called to Frankston Wharf in Melbourne’s south-east following reports of an assault shortly after 6am on Saturday.

A 45-year-old man from Cranbourne North was found unconscious and died at the scene.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man on the beach shortly after the gruesome discovery.

The man, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder over the elderly man’s death.

He will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, the crime scene was cordoned off as investigators and State Emergency Services searched for evidence.

“Homicide detectives are investigating and are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with the incident,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“It is also believed that the parties involved did not know each other.”
