Police have launched a major operation at Sydney’s Jewish Museum after a “suspicious object” was found inside.

Emergency services were called to the museum on Darlinghurst Road in Darlinghurst, central Sydney, shortly after 9.30am after the item was reportedly located on the first floor.

NSW Fire and Rescue service commander Michael Woodward told reporters a “substance” had been found at the scene.

“The substance has been rendered safe,” Mr Woodward said.

NSW Police confirmed there was “no threat” but urged the public to avoid the area which has been closed off for the operation.

Images from the scene show several fire trucks and police vehicles stopped in front of the museum while about 50 people were evacuated to nearby Green Park.

Police officers were seen speaking to several of the evacuees as a hazardous materials team equipped with gas masks examined the building.

Mr Woodward said emergency services had carried out safety tests on the building and found there was no lingering danger.

More to come.
