- The word “responsibility” in a speech by Edith Cowan is misspelled in the note
An embarrassing spelling error can be detected on millions of $50 notes circulating in Australia because they were never removed from the market after being printed in 2018.
The word “responsibility” is misspelled as “responsibility”, although it is almost impossible to detect it at first glance since the text is extremely small.

Spelling error can be found on millions of $50 bills in circulation
The note was put into circulation in October 2018 and many remain today, as the Reserve Bank decided not to withdraw them.
The word is part of a speech by Australia’s first female politician, Edith Cowan, whose portrait appears in the note.
‘I am here today in the unique position of being the first woman in an Australian parliament. It’s a big responsibility,’ she said in her speech.
The misspelling is included three times in the note, as the text of Ms Cowan’s speech is repeated in the layout.
In 2018, a Reserve Bank of Australia spokesperson said they were aware of the error.
“The spelling will be corrected in the next printing,” he said.
A spokeswoman added: ‘We will not withdraw or remove notes with spelling errors. They will remain in circulation until they reach the normal end of their useful life.’
In 2018, a Reserve Bank of Australia spokesperson said they were aware of the error.
Rare currency dealer Jim Noble said the notes with the printing error will not be worth more as there are millions in circulation.
“That is a very embarrassing mistake,” he said.
‘The responsibility lies with those who produce it. “It’s a joke for Australia.”
