JetBlue President Marty St. George said in the press release that this move is a “win-win” for the airline and aims to improve “the customer experience.”

“Carry-on luggage is an important part of the journey for customers, and when presented with the choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another airline’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner,” St. George said.

“We are always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences.”

Although this policy will go into effect this fall, JetBlue noted that some carry-on bags may still need to be checked due to limited space in the plane’s compartments.

“As flying becomes cheaper and more accessible to a spectrum of customers, a one-size-fits-all deal no longer works,” St. George said.

“Whether a customer prefers more included benefits or shops solely on price, our fare options, along with our excellent inflight service, make JetBlue the best choice.”

The current policy for travelers with Basic Blue fare tickets does not allow the passenger to carry a handbag.

However, travelers with Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra and Mint fare tickets are allowed to bring a carry-on bag on their flights.

Travelers with Blue Basic fare tickets are the last group to board a JetBlue flight, meaning these travelers may be the most likely to need to check their carry-on bags for free if necessary.

The new policy has excited X users (formerly Twitter), and one person tweeted“Thank God I haven’t flown with them for that reason.”

All carry-on luggage must fit in an overhead compartment or under the seat in front of the passenger.

If a bag that was expected to be a carry-on bag exceeds the length or weight, it will need to be checked and the traveler will be charged a $65 fee if it is their first or second bag.
