The new battle cards introduce what is now the seventh card type in Magic.
Anyone who picks up a new Magic: The Gathering card set or booster soon might find a whole new type of card in it. Because since then on April 21, 2023 the new expansion set March of the Machines
was released, there is a completely new map type.
A remarkable fact, even if Magic now introduces completely new mechanics every year. However, most of these are just special keywords that use existing card types for their effects. Previous card types have included:
- Countries
- creatures
- Enchantments
- artifacts
- instant
- witchcrafts
- planeswalkers
Original card types were only the first six when Magic was released over 30 years ago. In 2007, the planeswalkers were added as a completely new card type and have shaped the game to this day. There is now also a seventh type: the battle cards.

The new battle cards can do that
The battle cards are closely related to the current Magic meta-story, which is about a massive invasion of Phyrexia across all worlds in the multiverse. As expected, this entails many skirmishes and sieges, which are illustrated using the new battle maps.
Battle cards are double-faced cards that represent a land siege on the front and a creature or sorcery on the back. In order to be able to Summon the effect or the card on the back, you must overcome your battle.

Battles consist of two sides. Most of the time you want to overcome the battle to get the card on the back into play.
You can attack these cards yourself or use effects to lower their defenses. Battles can usually be attacked in a certain way, but currently there are only sieges. In this case, one of your opponents can use monsters as a defender to prevent damage to the battle.
Of course, there are plans to add other battle types to the game in addition to sieges in the future. So stay tuned to see how this new guy shapes the game in the future.
