A glamorous MAGA lawmaker has mysteriously quit her role for family reasons just weeks after winning re-election.
Rising Republican star Kera Birkeland, 41, dropped the news that she will resign her seat in the Utah House on January 10, 2025 – just days before the new legislative session begins.
In a message to Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz posted on X, formerly Twitter, Birkeland claimed she needed to focus on “family and professional obligations.”
“My family and professional commitments increasingly require my attention outside the home, a trend I expect will continue over the next two years,” she wrote.
‘This choice was not made lightly; It has been weighing heavily on my mind for a while, partly because I have the feeling that my work here is far from finished. Nevertheless, current circumstances require me to focus on other important responsibilities,” she continued.
She added in her statement about X that her priorities are her faith, family and constituents, but right now her loved ones, especially her parents, need “more of her time.”
In an email to colleagues obtained by KSL.comBirkeland revealed the personal crisis behind her sudden departure.
She wrote that her “mother’s illness has required a lot of time and attention,” she wrote on Thursday.

The sudden departure comes after she secured a two-year term last month.
Birkeland was first appointed in April 2020 and became known for his fight against transgender athletes in girls’ sports
During her time in office, Birkeland sponsored several major pieces of legislation on transgender rights.
She sponsored HB11 in 2022, which banned transgender athletes from competing in girls’ high school sports.
Although initially vetoed by Governor Spencer Cox, the bill later passed when lawmakers overrode the veto during a special session.
Earlier this year, she sponsored additional legislation that limited transgender access to restrooms in government buildings while expanding requirements for unisex facilities.
In her resignation letter, Birkeland described her legislative service as “immensely satisfying” and expressed hope that her successor would “continue to uphold the common sense and values that define Utah.”

“I am grateful that my children have seen their mother combine many successful years of work, public service, faith and family,” she wrote. “But it’s okay to prioritize the things that matter most. For me, that is and will always be my family.’
House Speaker Mike Schultz praised Birkeland’s service after the announcement.
“I am proud to call her a colleague and, more importantly, a friend,” he said. ‘I wish her nothing but the best and thank her for her years of service in the House of Representatives.’
Since the news broke, many rumors have been circulating about the ‘real reason’ why Birkeland might be leaving office.
Birkeland took to social media to address circulating rumors about why she is “really leaving.”
She even shared a photo of herself in a Grinch costume, mocking those who gossip about her.
‘So many people are waiting for the scandal to break out. What is my real reason for my dismissal? Maybe it’s my secret obsession with the Grinch,” she captioned the photo.
