Six years after NBC’s beloved but short-lived Hannibal series went off the air, series star Mads Mikkelsen made a rather surprising revelation.

The 55-year-old actor opened up about the beloved series, which ran for three seasons on NBC between 2013 and 2015, in a new interview with Vulture.

Although it didn’t eventually happen, the Danish actor revealed that there was almost a storyline where his character Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham kissed.

The actor revealed that both he, and his co-star Dancy, were ready for the characters to get romantic, as they both wanted them to kiss in the Season 3 finale.

“ We actually did a few shots of the very last scene where we looked at each other, and it was a little too obvious – it was almost a kiss, ” Mikkelsen recalls.

“Me and Hugh were like,” Why not? We have a few takes. Let’s do one. It might be cool, “added Mikkelsen.

Still, the kiss never happened, after series creator / showrunner Bryan Fuller agreed to have the final say despite liking the idea.

‘We never went for the kiss. Bryan loved it, but he said, “Too much, guys. It’s too obvious.” And he was absolutely right. ‘

That Season 3 finale eventually became the series finale, as NBC announced just a few weeks after the start of the season that Hannibal would not be returning for a fourth season.

Mikkelsen added that he thinks both he and Dancy were “ just stuck with that, ” adding that many of the show’s devoted fans, known as Fannibals, “ wanted it too. ”

It has been the subject of gay erotic fan art. And for good reason, because in many ways they are as united as twins, ”said Mikkelsen.

‘But we never wanted it to be something physical. It was something much bigger than that, ”he added.
