James Maddison celebrated his World Cup call-up by posting a throwback photo in England’s face paint.
The 25-year-old midfielder was initially feared he would miss out on a plane ticket to Qatar – despite his scintillating season at Leicester – but his form has been rewarded by Gareth Southgate.
Maddison has forced his way back into the England lineup nearly three years after his one and only senior cap, which came in the 7-0 win over Montenegro.
James Maddison has plenty to laugh about after being selected for England’s World Cup squad
He was selected for the 26-man roster ahead of Jarrod Bowen, Ivan Toney, Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham.
And to celebrate his roster, Maddison shared a throwback photo of him as a young fan wearing Three Lions face paint.
He tweeted: ‘It hasn’t hit me yet…I’m going to the World Cup. Dreams really do come true.’
Since August 2021, the playmaker has 18 goals and 12 assists in the Premier League alone
England fans have expressed delight at the inclusion of James Maddison in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup.
Maddison impressed with six goals and four assists in the league for Leicester this season, but was often overlooked by Southgate for previous England squads.
However, the 25-year-old, who has one cap for England, is going to Qatar.
He now hopes to add to his lone cap won for his country in November 2019
One fan wrote: ‘Southgate has finally chosen Maddison!! Get in!!! It’s coming home!!!’.
Another Twitter user suggested Maddison should start for England.
They wrote: ‘Increasingly of the opinion that James Maddison should start for England. Glad he’s on the plane anyway, what an asset!’.
