Lyon sports director Juninho took no prisoners in his assessment of Memphis Depay, accusing the outgoing star of ‘having the whole team revolve around him’ as if he were on par with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Manchester United flop will leave the Ligue 1 giants for free this summer and is strongly linked to a move to Barcelona.
Depay has been one of the most outstanding players in Lyon in recent years since joining United in 2017, finishing as their top scorer this season with 21 league goals – only PSG’s Kylian Mbappé managed more than he.

However, Juninho, who spent eight years as a player at the club, had some strong words for Depay when he slammed the Dutchman before leaving.
“Memphis Depay just wanted a team for himself,” said the Brazilian OLTV.
‘It’s not a criticism, I had a good relationship with him. But on the other hand, the whole team had to revolve around him and that is very difficult. Everyone should feel like they work the same.
‘There are only four players in the world for whom you have to do everything: Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar and Mbappé. If you have one, the team can revolve around it.
Sorry, I think Depay is strong, but he’s not up to their level. And I think he has to work harder without a ball. ‘

27-year-old winger Depay is strongly associated with a free transfer to Barcelona this summer
Depay’s career in Lyon
The 27-year-old winger was tipped to become one of the best players in the world when he joined United in 2015, but went through a scorching time in England struggling to master life in the Premier League.
However, he got his career back on track in France and has consistently performed at a high level for Lyon for the past four years, scoring 75 times in 178 appearances for the club.
Depay’s deal expires this summer, but no decision on his future has yet been made, although a reunion with ex-Holland boss Ronald Koeman at Barcelona seems the most likely scenario.
However, Koeman’s position as Barcelona boss is under pressure after they finished third in LaLiga and recent reports have claimed that the Netherlands international will only make the switch to the Nou Camp if he keeps the lead.
