The man held in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson shared a series of quotes online from “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, along with others referencing health and illness.
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League student from Maryland, posted at least a half-dozen quotes from the homegrown terrorist who ravaged the nation for nearly two decades with his homemade bombs.
“Imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy and then gives them the drugs to take away their unhappiness,” read an excerpt from a Kaczynski quote on Mangione’s Goodreads page.
“The concept of ‘mental health’ in our society is largely defined by the extent to which an individual behaves in accordance with the needs of the system and does so without showing signs of stress,” said another.
Mangione was arrested Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania in connection with last week’s fatal shooting in Manhattan.
He was caught with a 3D printed gun and a handwritten manifesto, similar to the mathematician turned bomber.
Kaczynski, who died of cancer last year, famously saw his reign of terror thwarted after his brother recognized his writing style in Industrial Society and Its Future, an anti-technology essay he wrote and published in The Washington Post.
Mangione, a computer science major at the University of Pennsylvania, seemed to find inspiration from his fellow Ivy Leaguer, quoting extensively from Industrial Society and Its Future on his Goodreads page.
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League student from Maryland, was a known anti-capitalist, according to his social media.
Post shows how the detained person of interest — seen here in still-secure accommodation at an Upper West Side hostel before the killing last week — shared a series of quotes from the ‘Unabomber’ online, along with others that referenced health and disease
He also included quotes ranging from Socrates and Marcus Aurelius to Aldous Huxley and Dr. Seuss.
“They say a healthy person has a thousand wishes, but a sick person has only one wish: to get better,” read another quote on his Goodreads page, attributed to bestselling fitness author Joe De Sena of The Spartan Way: Eat Better. Train better. Think harder. Be better.
Some of Kaczynski’s other quotes included: “The conservatives are fools: they whine about the decline of traditional values, yet they enthusiastically support technological progress and economic growth.”
