‘Thank you for all the support over the last week, I feel very grateful. Now back to the couch to enjoy some F1 and football. Have a nice Sunday everyone x.’
On Thursday he returned to the hospital for the second time.
Alex explained that despite undergoing two procedures and receiving steroid treatment on Monday, his throat had started to swell and worsen again, as he confessed he was finding it difficult to stay positive.
Updating his followers, he wrote: ‘Spirit is feeling a bit broken writing this but sadly I had to return to A&E this morning, throat was swelling and getting worse.
‘Breathing is fine, but that is always the big concern. I really want to be positive but I haven’t slept in a week, barely eaten with pain and fever.
“I know there are a lot of people worse off than me and I’m doing my best to be grateful and positive, but yeah, I guess it can’t always be like that.”
Alex went on to thank healthcare professionals for all their support as he shared a photo of himself from his hospital bed hooked up to a machine with cannulas in his arm.
He continued: ‘The doctors and nurses have been very kind and attentive, thank you. Now I have to roll with the punches and I’ll be better soon.

‘The last few days I have had tonsillitis with fever, but yesterday the swelling around my tonsil went crazy and the pain was very bad.
“I was hoping it wouldn’t get worse but last night at midnight it was too much and I could barely swallow it so I went to St Thomas A&E.”
Returning to St Thomas’s brought back some difficult memories for the doctor, as it was the same hospital he was treated at when he battled sepsis, which left Alex bedridden for several days and almost killed him.
He reflected: ‘It’s a bit strange for me to return to St Thomas’ Hospital as a few years ago I almost died from sepsis. If it weren’t for the incredible care of the doctors and nurses, I wouldn’t be here.
“There’s a deep sense of humility that happens when you feel so bad that you need to ask someone, ‘Can you please help me?'”
‘By asking that question, you are submitting and allowing others to step in and help you, when you can no longer help yourself.
‘I had the same feeling, probably to a greater extent, when I had sepsis. Realizing what I would do if you weren’t here to help me right now. Actually, what would I do?
Alex praised the NHS team who had cared for him and expressed gratitude for their kind treatment, revealing that he had undergone two procedures and medication and was feeling better.
He gushed: ‘Last night I was seen by the St Thomas’ A&E team (who were lovely and incredible), before being transferred to Guys Hospital under the care of the ENT team.
‘I had medication and a procedure overnight and felt some relief. I had another procedure this morning and I feel better.
‘I cannot emphasize, reiterate or say this enough, I am so grateful to everyone who has taken care of me.
‘From the doctors and nurses, to the receptionist who checked me in with kindness and empathy, to the paramedic who transferred me and kept me feeling positive, to the lovely cook who is making me an apple crumble to snack on. You are a credit to your profession and your families.’
Reflecting on his health, although he admitted to feeling “high” from the medication, he added: “I’m lying in the hospital bed right now, feeling a little high from the steroids, but really thinking about how much I value my health, being being able to move and exercise, be able to feel good.
‘Never take it for granted! No day is promised, let us live as long as we can.’

Complications of tonsillitis are very rare, but they can cause an abscess to form between the tonsils and the wall of the throat, called angina.
Signs of angina occur when the swelling in your mouth and throat becomes so painful and severe that you have difficulty speaking, swallowing, breathing, or opening your mouth.
The NHS recommends that you call 999 or go to A&E if you have these symptoms.
