Los Angeles police face off with protesters at City Hall

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police in riot gear faced screaming protesters outside the entrance to City Hall on Tuesday, demanding that the city council suspend the meeting until two councilors resign for their part in a private meeting that involved crude, racist remarks.

The protest of about 50 people took place outside a door of City Hall, although the Council met virtually with only the acting president and staff in the chambers. Protesters chanted, “No resignation, no meeting!” Police pushed back the protesters who crossed the street without incident.

The Council has been in turmoil over the past week an explosive shot A closed-door meeting has leaked in which the then-Chairman of the Council, Nury Martinez, made rude and racist remarks, and Councilors Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo did not object or interfere in the offensive chatter.

Martinez made racist comments about the black son of a white councilor and other rude comments. Those involved in the year-old meeting were all Latinos, who focused much of the discussion on plans to protect their political power while redrawing the council’s district boundaries.

Martinez has since resigned, but de Leon and Cedillo have so far resisted widespread calls for their resignation, including from President Joe Biden.

Last week, protesters burst into the council chamber and angrily called on councilors to resign. Those complaints continued unabated during Tuesday’s virtual meeting, when a long list of speakers called on the Council to suspend business until De Leon and Cedillo resign.
