Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass turned down a Kim Kardashian Skims swag bag.
Reuters editor Ben Welsh reported that the Kardashian family sent the mayor $600 worth of items from Kim’s shapewear and clothing company, according to a log received via a public records request. The swag bag contained Skims items, liquor, hot sauce, makeup items and more.
But of the more than 130 gifts sent to Bass, the one from the Kardashians she received in April was one of the few she refused to accept. According to the city ethics committeeelected officials are required to report gifts of $50 or more, and gifts are limited to $590 per entity or person per year.
Other items Bass declined included a necklace worth $97 from Maya Brenner, $260 jerseys from Los Angeles FC, a sweater and a gift bag from Kristin McCowan of Los Angeles Dodgers, the senior director of government and community relations, and a handful of other garments and swag bags from other people and companies.
After beating developer Rick Caruso in the running for mayor last year, Bass became the first black woman to lead the United States’ second-largest city. Prior to becoming mayor, she served as the U.S. Representative for California’s 37th congressional district from 2013 to 2022.
Kim Kardashian founded Skims in 2019 as originally a shapewear company. Over the years, the company has grown into one of the reality TV star and businesswoman’s hottest brands, expanding into loungewear and sleepwear. According to ForbesSkims is now worth more than $3.2 billion.
