“I was the same age as many of the Euro 2024 WAGs when he courted me in my late teens, and our mutual breakup in 2012 coincided with the moment my career eclipsed his (I was smart enough to devote myself to broadcasting while we were married).
“Today I am an older and sometimes wiser woman, 56 years old. When Jason was playing for the England Under-21 team, the WAG culture was not yet established.
“Wagging” was something a dog did with its tail. Since then I have attended many tournaments, such as the Euro Cup, as a reporter for ITV.
‘The match itself is also stressful for a WAG. They need their other half to play well; Family life is much easier when they do. Believe me, no one wants an unhappy couple after the game.
‘Thankfully I’ve never had to deal with online trolling, but that’s something the WAGs of 2024 are now facing.
“I would say that everyone should lock their phones during the tournament, but since most of them are influencers, that advice would surely fall on deaf ears.”
