Aston Villa are making plans to strengthen in the January transfer window, but Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is not expected to be on their radar at this stage.

The England international has yet to start a Premier League game this season with boss Jurgen Klopp who is reluctant to change the formula which has left Liverpool third in the league table, two points behind leader Chelsea.

Gomez, 24, moved from Charlton to Anfield more than six years ago and quickly cemented his reputation as one of the best young defenders in the country, although he has had some bad luck with injuries.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has started life strong at Villa Park, racking up maximum points from his first two games as manager ahead of Wednesday’s encounter with Manchester City.

Before Gerrard took over, Villa had lost five games in a row, a point that cost Dean Smith his job. But Gerrard has made an immediate impact since coming from Rangers and leading Villa to Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Gerrard was publicly cautious when asked about Villa’s plans for the transfer window, but he is expected to receive support from Villa’s billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.
