Liverpool have been keeping a close eye on Fabio Carvalho, the Portuguese attacking midfielder who has helped propel Fulham’s insatiable scoring run.

Carvalho, 19, scored two goals and added another in Birmingham City’s 6-2 drubbing on Tuesday and was also on target in their win from the same deficit to Bristol City last Saturday.

The Portuguese, who was born in Lisbon but came through Fulham’s education after moving to London at the age of 11, has scored seven league goals this season and attracted the attention of clubs such as Barcelona and Liverpool.

Liverpool have shown the greatest interest, according to a report in the athletic, while the Merseysiders produced “glowing” scout reports on the teen.

And Jurgen Klopp’s side could reward the Fulham youngster for a princely sum as he has completed the final five months of his contract with Craven Cottage.

However, it is reported that Carvalho does not yet have a traditional agent and is represented by his family, which could potentially slow down an imminent move to Anfield.

Fulham are also desperate to hold onto the prodigy a little longer so they can continue to take advantage of his attacking play as they try to make a swift return to the Premier League.

They also want to sign him for a longer contract in the hope that they can make more money later by selling him to a bigger club.

The West Londoners are still feeling raw from losing starlet Harvey Elliot to Liverpool in 2019, earning just £1.7million before the move after a tribunal.

Fulham coach Marco Silva praised his compatriot after his starring role in the 6-2 win at home against Birmingham.

“Fabio has natural talent and having natural talent is the first big step to a great career and to the top,” Silva said.

“Fabio has other things that are really important. He comes every day to work very hard, with the right mindset to learn, and he is humble.”

The coach also issued a warning to the player, urging him not to rush into a decision about his future.

“He absolutely has to keep his feet on the ground, and the people around him,” the coach added.

“Because it’s important to understand that sometimes you want to take a step bigger than your leg can handle and sometimes you make a big mistake. I’m not saying it will be at Fulham or club A, B or C. But sometimes you have to understand that a football career is not just in one moment – you also have to prepare for the future.”

Elliot is far from the only promising player to leave Fulham on a bargain deal, leaving the club feeling shortchanged.

Moussa Dembele joined Celtic in 2016 for just a fee, while Matt Riley also moved to Parkhead after being turned down a long-term contract with Fulham in 2020.

Mika Biereth recently joined Arsenal as Cody Drameh jumped to Leeds.

“We have to do something else,” Silva added.

“Unfortunately for us as a club, this has happened more than once. We must avoid these kinds of situations. I know football is different now, some young players think differently about it too.

“It is not normal that it has happened so often for Fulham in recent years. The reality is that we are talking about more players, not just Fabio.”
