Zakaria, a Swiss international, is out of contract in the summer and the Reds are reportedly in pole position to secure his signature.

He broke through with Servette and signed for Swiss giant Young Boys before moving to the Bundesliga.

Since moving to Mönchengladbach, the 25-year-old has played 138 times in all competitions and has been a mainstay in midfield.

Klopp would like reinforcements in midfield as the Reds had previously failed to replace Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum, who left for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer.

It has been said that January is not a good time to bring in new recruits, but if you look at Liverpool’s recent history they have been very astute with sporting director Michael Edwards working his magic.

Talisman defender Virgil van Dijk was a winter window catch from Southampton in a £75million deal. Japanese international Takumi Minamino also joined the Red Bull Salzburg club during the winter period.

Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were all brought to the club midway through the season.

Zakaria is thought to be worth over £24million, but the Reds will want to negotiate a bargain deal and put pressure on Monchengladbach as Liverpool could sign the player for free in the summer.

Other clubs that have expressed interest in his services include Bayern, Juventus and Barcelona.

But the draw of playing under Klopp, and the fact that the Reds are one of the favorites to win both the Premier League and Champions League, could help Liverpool sign their man.
