Liverpool: Gary Neville urges Reds to sign Christian Eriksen this summer
‘If Liverpool are looking for a midfielder, why not Christian Eriksen?’: Gary Neville urges the Reds to sign the soon-to-be-out-of-contract midfielder from Brentford this summer as he is ‘a brilliant professional whose quality in the ball is incredible’
- Christian Eriksen has just over a month on his contract with Brentford before it ends
- Eriksen has impressed for the Bees since signing a short-term deal with the club.
- Gary Neville feels the 30-year-old would improve Liverpool’s midfield options.
It’s not often you find Manchester United stalwarts giving advice to their bitter rivals Liverpool and vice versa, but Gary Neville has given a suggestion to make the Reds even better ahead of next season.
The Anfield side could finish a brilliant season as Treble winners if they beat Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League final to add to their successes in the League Cup and FA Cup.
Despite his dominance, Neville feels his midfield could be strengthened, identifying Christian Eriksen as a perfect addition to his team.
Liverpool should try to sign Christian Eriksen on a free transfer this summer, says Gary Neville
Eriksen has impressed for Brentford since signing a short-term deal with the club in January.
After suffering cardiac arrest during last summer’s European Championship, Eriksen has returned to football with a vengeance since signing a short-term deal with Brentford in January.
The 30-year-old has provided four assists and scored once in 10 starts for the club and is third in overall chances created in the Premier League, behind Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold, since his Bees debut.
The Danish international’s contract at Brentford expires at the end of next month and United legend Neville believes Liverpool would be a perfect destination for him next if he decides not to sign a new deal alongside Thomas Frank.
‘I think Eriksen will be signed by a big club. He could show loyalty, to be fair, for what Brentford has done for him,’ he told the Overlapping fan debate.
‘I’ll tell you what, if you were a top six club who were looking for a three in midfield and you wanted a player to come in there and play 30 games for you in some type of squad [situation]would you do it [take him].
He could play for Manchester City, he could play for Liverpool, he could play for any of the top six.
Neville believes that Eriksen would be a perfect team player for the Reds and would provide additional quality.
‘I’m not saying start every week, but I could get in. look what [Xherdan] Shaqiri was doing at Liverpool for two or three years there.
If Liverpool are looking for a midfielder to replace, say, Thiago [Alcantara] – who gets injured a little – why don’t you look at Eriksen?
‘Why wouldn’t you get him to come over for two seasons and do a job for you doing that? He is brilliant. He is a brilliant professional, he is a great player, his quality on the ball is unbelievable.
‘To be fair, Brentford played here [at Old Trafford]it was one of the games United won, but some of Eriksen’s passing in that game was out of this world at Old Trafford.
“I thought about it then, but Liverpool need midfielders, they need quality people to feed the forwards and to be fair, why wouldn’t you? [sign Eriksen]? They did that with Shaqiri.
