Liverpool’s defending duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez stepped up their recovery from a knee injury, filming themselves training in Portugal on Wednesday.

Van Dijk has been sidelined since October with a torn cruciate ligament suffered after a wild challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Gomez then joined his fellow center on the treatment table about a month later when he suffered a knee injury while on duty in England.

Their absence gave Jurgen Klopp major selection headaches all season as The Reds handed their Premier League title over to Manchester City without a fuss.

But now they are on their way to recovery and Liverpool are hopeful they can participate in the preparation for the season from the start when Klopp’s men reunite later in the summer.

Gomez and Van Dijk have completed their rehab together and the pair have taken their recovery program to Portugal as they near their return.

England star Gomez posted a series of clips of him and Van Dijk being tried out on a training pitch.

In addition to the song and lyrics to rapper Lil Baby’s “Emotionally Scarred,” you could see them sprinting and performing various exercises with the ball in a grueling session.

Gomez also posted the caption ‘On our way’ and tagged Van Dijk.

Klopp believes that both players, and Joel Matip, should all be able to participate in the preparations for the season when his team returns on July 12.

There was an outside chance that Van Dijk would play for the Netherlands at this summer’s European Championship, but that was ruled out by the player himself as he continues to build his fitness.

In the absence of the trio, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Ozan Kabak, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams all had to play center backs at some point in the season.

Liverpool have already taken steps to correct their lack of depth in central defence, completing a £36m move for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.

The deal sees Kabak return to Schalke after his loan spell at Anfield, but Kabak has offers from Premier League and Bundesliga teams after filling admirably for players like Van Dijk.

Liverpool would also be interested in signing a midfielder to replace Georginio Wijnaldum and a striker, but Klopp’s budget will be affected by player sales.

Marko Grujic, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson and Divock Origi are among those who could leave Anfield this summer.
