Liverpool are close to completing a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as the Georgian international becomes the Reds’ first signing under the Arne Slot era.

Mail Sport previously revealed that Liverpool have stepped up talks to sign the 23-year-old, and after several rounds of negotiations, a deal is close to being sealed.

Bournemouth have been suggested as a possible destination for the Georgian, but such a move would breach Premier League rules as the Reds cannot buy and then loan a player to a league rival in the same transfer window.

However, Mamardashvili is considering the possibility of a loan move to Valencia this season, especially as Liverpool number one Alisson is expected to remain at the club.

The Georgian goalkeeper joined Valencia on loan in the summer of 2021 and subsequently signed a permanent contract until 2027 the following year.

Since then, he has been considered one of the best performing goalkeepers in LaLiga, with reports of AS that the main shareholder of Los Ches, Peter Lim, was not willing to negotiate a deal that involved such a key player for the team.

Mamardashvili featured in all of Georgia’s matches at Euro 2024 and left a strong impression with his skills, especially after his side beat Portugal with an impressive display of five saves from the goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old is a product of Dinamo Tbilisi’s academy but made his first steps in senior football at Georgian side Metalurgi Rustavi.

Mamardashvili already played the full 90 minutes for Valencia in his LaLiga debut against Barcelona on Saturday.

The Reds remain the only club in Europe’s top five leagues yet to make a signing in this transfer window after failing to convince their top target, Martin Zubimendi, who will remain at his boyhood club Real Sociedad for another year.

The development comes after the Reds' top target Martin Zubimendi snubbed the club and stayed at his boyhood club Real Sociedad.

However, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has responded to criticism over the club’s pragmatic approach when considering new signings.

“I’ve said it many times, we have a very strong squad and it’s not easy to find players who can help us or reinforce the squad. Zubimendi was one of them, to be fair, but he decided not to come. We’re going to move forward with the ones we have. We’re in a good moment,” said the Reds manager.
