Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his opinion on the dismissal of Erik ten Hag from Manchester United.

Ten Hag was sacked by United on Monday after just over two years in charge following a disappointing start to the season, with United 14th in the Premier League and yet to record a win in Europe.

Slot arrived in England this summer but played a part in Ten Hag’s downfall when he led his Liverpool team to a 3-0 win at Old Trafford last month.

Despite the rivalry between Liverpool and United, Slot has shown some sympathy for Ten Hag’s situation and has advised his fellow Dutchman to get well.

“He’s a Dutch manager, which makes it even more difficult for me and for us as Dutch,” Slot said at a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Brighton for the Carabao Cup match on Wednesday.

‘Your first thoughts are always with the person. We’re all in this job, so we know it can happen, but if it does, especially since I know you a little bit and I know how much work you put into it, then getting this news from you is a shame.

“But we also know, especially coming from Holland, how well he did at Ajax and that he won two trophies here, so we will see him again in the near future at some big club.” “Right now, for him and his family it is a great disappointment.”

Prior to his arrival at Anfield, Ten Hag seemed intent on mocking Slot in May when he downplayed Feyenoord’s achievements last season.

Feyenoord finished seven points behind champions PSV Eindhoven, and Ten Hag told Voetbal International: “People have become too lyrical about Feyenoord.

‘Feyenoord remained stable this year, but not at the top. PSV Eindhoven was two categories better in all aspects. In terms of dominating the ball, in terms of pressure, in terms of intensity, whatever.”

And he added: “PSV Eindhoven were better than the rest by far, even much better than Feyenoord.”

But Slot got his revenge earlier this season when Liverpool easily beat United, and has now outlasted Ten Hag in England.

United have moved quickly to find Ten Hag’s replacement, with the Red Devils inching closer to appointing Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag boarded a plane back to the Netherlands on Monday, where he will spend some time with his family after being relieved of his United duties.
