Schalke actually got out of the dressing room well. Of course, the 3-0 for the SCF now makes the task almost impossible for the guests.
Tooor for SC Freiburg, 3:0 by Lucas Höler
Freiburg puts the lid on it! Uronen goes into a duel in his own penalty area and unintentionally plays the ball directly to Höler, who shoots from ten meters with the right. His shot is actually too central, but it slips through Schwolow’s legs. Uronen and Schwolow didn’t look good there.
After a corner by Latza, Král volleys. The shot is blocked.
The following corner is cleared by Flekken.
Schalke comes out of the cabin well. Bülter hits a cross in front of the goal from the left. Terodde just missed from a short distance. The second ball lands on Frey’s head. Flekken fends off his conclusion over the crossbar.
Grifo falls to the ground in the Freiburg penalty area and stays down. Greiml’s physical effort is not enough for a penalty.
Substitution at FC Schalke 04: Michael Frey
Substitution at FC Schalke 04: Dominick Drexler
Substitution at FC Schalke 04: Leo Greiml
Substitution at FC Schalke 04: Moritz Jenz
Kick-off 2nd half
Freiburg goes into the break with a 2-0 lead against Schalke. The first half was very one-sided. Freiburg was the much better team. Schalke initially played well offensively, but the guests revealed huge gaps at the back. The Royal Blues were too far away from their opponents throughout the first half. This is how the SCF came to many degrees. The 2-0 is still a good half-time score from S04’s point of view. It was a class difference between the two teams. Everything has to get better at Schalke so that points can still be scored here.
End of 1st half
Yellow card for Jere Uronen (FC Schalke 04)
Dōan wins the ball in the center circle. Uronen then tackles it. There’s yellow for that.
Official stoppage time (minutes): 1
Grifo takes a corner from the left in front of the goal. Ginter comes to the header. His degree goes way beyond that.
Grifo’s following corner leads to a long-range shot from Dōan. But the Schlenzer goes to the left.
Gregoritsch has a lot of space on the left. He flanks in the direction of Höler. Latza clears his head to the corner.
Günter tries a shot to the left of the edge of the box. His shot goes a good three yards wide of the far post.
The lead for Freiburg is well deserved. Schalke are far too far away from their opponents in and around their own penalty area. The hosts always have plenty of time and space for their actions. This is not a Bundesliga-ready defense of S04.
Tooor for SC Freiburg, 2-0 through Michael Gregoritsch
Gregoritsch puts together the double pack! Once again, a player from Freiburg gets far too much space to cross in the left half-field. This time it’s Kübler who brings the ball right into the middle. Gregoritsch only lets the cross 15 meters in front of the goal slip over the crown. His conclusion hits right next to the right post.
Freiburg has the next good chance. Grifo pulls the ball from the left into the middle. Then he shoots from the edge of the penalty area with his right into the long corner. Schwolow parried well.
Freiburg has everything under control. The hosts don’t have as many chances to score anymore, but they don’t allow anything at all.
Terodde remains lying after a header duel in the Freiburg penalty area. He got Keitel’s head in the jaw. But that’s not a penalty.
Günter brings the free kick sharply to the first post. Höfler comes to the header. But his degree goes two meters over it.
After a duel with Jenz, Höler gets a free kick near the right corner flag. That’s the right decision because Jenz was clearly too late.
A long ball reaches Günter on the left wing, where he has plenty of space. He pulls from the edge of the box but doesn’t hit the ball properly. His shot bounces past the far post.
Matriciani hits the ball low from the right in front of the goal. Terodde would be ready, but Flekken intercepts the cross.
Gregoritsch wants to hit a cross into the middle from the left. But he hits the ball completely wrong. The flank attempt goes far past the goal.
Höler with a nice try. Günter throws a throw-in to Höler from the left side of the penalty area. The striker takes the ball volley. His shot goes wide just above the right angle.
Günter crosses from the left to the middle. At the penalty spot, Dōan is free to head the ball. But he gets no pressure behind it. The slack end ends up in Schwolow’s arms.
Schalke are actually playing quite well, but the Royal Blues are extremely vulnerable on the defensive. Almost every Freiburg attack becomes a great opportunity.
The post saves Schalke from 2-0! Drexler brings a weak corner in from the left. A Freiburg clears the first post. The bullet lands on Dōan, who picks up the pace straight away. Then he plays a good pass into Grifo’s barrel. The Italian goes into the penalty area on the right and shoots flat to the far corner. His good finish hits the post. Lucky for S04.
Bülter prevails on the left wing against Ginter. Then he crosses sharply in the middle. The ball is blocked.
Schalke keeps too much distance from their opponents in these first few minutes. This is how the guests make it easy for the SC.
Tooor for SC Freiburg, 1-0 through Michael Gregoritsch
Now Schwolow is beaten. Freiburg takes the early lead. Dōan plays a perfect pass from the center to Gregoritsch, who goes into the penalty area on the left and takes a shot from the near corner with his left. The shot goes flat off the post. Schwolow has no chance this time.
Schwolow prevented the early Freiburg leadership! Günter has a lot of space to cross in the left half field. His cross reaches Gregoritsch, who heads at goal from six meters. Schwolow parried strongly. The rebound lands at the feet of Dōan, who fires from close range. Schwolow catches the margin. That was strong from the goalkeeper.
Freiburg comes from the left side. Günter brings the ball low into the penalty area. Kamiński clarifies.
Schalke comes forward for the first time. Bülter plays a good pass down the left into Král’s run. But his entry fails. The ball flies out of the goal.
The game starts slowly. The fans of both teams make a lot of noise.
Thomas Reis is also forced to make several changes. He trades three times compared to the win against Hertha. Ferryman, Brunner and Skarke are injured. They are represented by Schwolow, Uronen and Karaman.
On the staff: Christian Streich makes two changes at Freiburg compared to the win against Werder. Eggestein and Sallai are out because they saw their fifth yellow card against Bremen. They are replaced by Keitel and Gregoritsch.
Schalke celebrated an extremely important victory last Friday. The Royal Blues won 5-2 against Hertha in the relegation duel. And the victory was deserved. The performances in the second half of the season give hope that the Knappen can still leave the direct relegation zone they are currently on. But the rest of the program has it all. On the last four matchdays it is against Mainz, Bayern, Frankfurt and Leipzig. That’s why points today against Freiburg and next week against Bremen would be all the more important.
Freiburg was somewhat lucky to win 2-1 against Bremen last weekend. With this success after three games without a win, the Breisgauers have moved back up to Leipzig in the table. You are only one point behind fourth place. So today’s game is extremely important in terms of the Champions League places. Leipzig will later play in Leverkusen.
Hello and welcome to the 29th matchday in the Bundesliga. Today at 3:30 p.m. SC Freiburg meets Schalke 04.
