England are looking to channel the spirit and grit of captain Joe Root in a bid to get a foothold in the Ashes.

Australia looked to be in control before Root’s half-century at Headingley on day three kickstarted a fightback that sees England needing 203 runs with seven wickets in hand.

The odds continue to be stacked against England despite fine batting performances from Root and Joe Denly, with Australia still expected to secure the Ashes at some stage on day four.

England were set an implausible 359 to square the series as they look to avoid Australia retaining the urn.

They made it to stumps on the third day of the enthralling Test on 156 for three, with Root unbeaten on 75 from 189 balls. A serious improvement on Friday’s sorry batting collapse.
